Despite a record number of recalls in 2014, new cars are actually getting safer according to the IIHS. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety raised the standards for vehicles to achieve Top Safety Pick+ and 11 more vehicles made the list this year than in 2014 testing.  Last year 39 vehicles were awarded Top Safety Pick or Top Safety Pick+ and this year the number jumped to 71. A total of 33 vehicles earned the top tier ranking and 38 earned Top Safety Pick ratings.

A rating of advanced or superior for available front crash prevention systems was added to the requirements for earning the highest ranking. For an advanced or superior rating, vehicles must stop or slow down without driver intervention before hitting a target in IIHS tests at 12 mph, 25 mph or both. Warning systems that don’t include automatic braking only qualify for the basic rating and 15 vehicles that qualified for Top Safety Pick+ in 2014 dropped down to Top Safety Pick as a result.

IIHS President Adrian Lund stated, “…we decided to tighten our criteria to encourage manufacturers to offer autobrake. Systems that don't require a driver response to avoid or mitigate a crash have the most potential for reducing crashes. Nevertheless, the models that are losing their plus signs are still great choices for safety, as are all the Top Safety Pick winners."

These results show that safety features including front crash prevention systems are making inroads across most size and price segments. Honda and Toyota performed the best on the list with the 2015 Toyota Sienna and 2015 Toyota Highlander being the only Minivan and Midsize SUVs respectively to earn the Top Safety Pick+ rating in those classes. Midsize and luxury cars are well represented in this year’s list. Only two minicars made the cut, the 2015 Chevrolet Spark and the 2015 Honda Fit.
