GM Wins North American Car and Truck of the Year at Detroit Auto Show

2014 Chevy Silverado and Corvette - Car and Truck of the Year2014 Chevy Silverado and Corvette - Car and Truck of the Year

The Detroit Auto Show started last week and on opening night it was announced that GM had won a rare sweep of the North American Car and Truck of the year awards for the 2014 Chevrolet Silverado and 2014 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray.

The winners were selected by a panel of automotive journalists from the United States and Canada. The other finalists in the truck and SUV category were the Acura MDX and Jeep Cherokee and other car finalists included the Cadillac CTS and the Mazda3. For Chevrolet to have 3 of the top 6 finalists in both categories was an impressive coup for the company and stole a bit of thunder from Ford’s launch of the new F-150 with its aluminum body.

To be eligible for the award vehicles must either be all new or substantially redesigned. Last year’s winners were the Cadillac ATS and Ram 1500 pickup.

Chevy Silverado - The Silverado full-size pickup was completely redesigned for 2014. Chevy says it is "new from hood to hitch, engineered to be stronger, smarter and more capable than ever before." The new exterior sheet metal gives the truck a heavily creased, squared, and powerful look. The interior was also revised with an upright instrument panel and 6-gauge cluster, along with several interior storage solutions. Chevrolet MyLink connects mobile devices with voice recognition software for safer driving. Chevy also offers a choice of three different all new engines with active fuel management for better fuel economy without a sacrifice in power. With a base price of $25,575 it’s easy to see why the Silverado is a very popular vehicle.

Chevy Corvette Stingray – The 2014 Corvette Stingray already won Automobile Magazine’s “Automobile of the Year” award in November and now Chevy can add the North American Car of the Year award to their display case. The 7th generation Corvette boasts a redesign that includes a carbon fiber hood and roof panel and an aluminum space frame that shaves almost 100 pounds off the weight and adds stiffness. Next-generation Magnetic Selective Ride Control offers incredible handling powered by a 455 horsepower V8 engine. The interior has also been greatly improved for increased comfort and technology.
