Find Cheap Gas For Your Labor Day Road Trip
It was true in 1960, when Smokey Robinson and the Miracles sang it, and it’s true today: You better shop around. Luckily, when it comes to shaving a few cents off the price of a fill-up, it’s far easier to find a good deal now than it was fifty years ago.
With the Labor Day Holiday weekend upon us, we evaluated a number of gas price websites and mobile applications, to see what solution provides the best coverage and most reliable data, and from our point of view GasBuddy.com is the best.
GasBuddy covers prices in the United States and Canada, and it offers an app for Android, Blackberry, iPhone, and Windows phones that allows you to see gas prices at stations near you -- wherever you are. Prices come from app users who report prices on the fly, and each report earns users points toward GasBuddy’s prize giveaways, which are often prepaid gas cards.
Along with finding the cheapest gas prices from GasBuddy at your local gas stations, if you really want to crunch some gas price stats you can check FuelEconomy.gov, which lists gasoline prices weekly by state, region, and major metropolitan areas, and compares those prices to last week and last year. There’s a graph at the bottom of the page for the visually inclined that charts national retail gasoline prices each week.
You can also click on AAA’s Daily Fuel Gauge Report, which bills itself as “the most comprehensive nationwide fuel price survey available from any source.” It sounds pretty impressive -- and it is. This site has national averages for today, yesterday, a week ago, a month ago, and a year ago. AAA surveys nearly 100,000 gas stations across the nation to find the average national, state, and local prices for gasoline, diesel, and E85. If you’ve got a road trip coming up, AAA’s Fuel Cost Calculator uses your starting point, destination, and vehicle information to give you the fuel cost of your one-way or round-trip journey.
