With 2013 coming to a close and 2014 just over a month away Automobile Magazine has named the 2014 Chevrolette Corvette Stingray the Automobile of the Year. The new Stingray has been a favorite of automotive enthusiasts since it was launched earlier this year.

The 2014 model is a full redesign with an aluminum frame instead of steel and it’s 100 pounds lighter. Also reducing weight are the hood and lift-off top, which are now both made out of carbon fiber. With 455 hp and a base price of $51,000 the Stingray doesn’t have a lot of direct competition and easily bested the runner up for this year’s contest, the Cadillac CTS, which was selected as Motor Trend Magazine’s Car of the Year.

The Corvette will go zero to sixty in less than 4 seconds and still manages to squeeze fuel economy of 17 mpg city and 29 mpg highway with a manual transmission. In Eco mode the Corvette uses only four cylinders part of the time to conserve fuel and the EPA numbers attest to the effectiveness of the car’s design.

Automobile Magazine’s testers were impressed with the customization options in the computerized traction and handling aids with five modes to choose from. Track mode is even more customizable to the point of turning off the aids entirely for complete control of the car. The interior was also praised, having been redesigned along with the exterior, and offering better sightlines and better materials than previous generations of the Corvette. Carbon fiber trim is an option as are competition sport seats in napa leather with sueded-microfiber inserts.

Exterior styling is the only aspect that drew criticism with the magazine calling it “busy”, especially with the Z51 package but the magazine also commented that the new design is at least a move forward after many years with little change to the body style. The new design also rates favorably with a younger crowd. “This is not just a car for the Corvette faithful but instead spreads the gospel to a new, wider audience,” states the author.
