2012 New York Auto Show - BMW
The new-to-us BMW X1 crossover made its American debut in New York. It has been on sale in Europe for a couple of years. BMW calls this a subcompact SAV (Sports Activity Vehicle) and it slots below the X3.
The X1 will be available with a 4 cylinder and exclusively in the US, a 6 cylinder. Acceleration in that model should be brisk, to say the least.
Also new from BMW, the 6 Series Gran Coupe. Following the trend of 4-door "coupes" started by Mercedes-Benz, the Bavarians bring us this low-slung whatchamacallit. The whole point of the 4-door coupe is to offer dramatic styling, with low rooflines (and the attendant peering-out-a-barrel back seat accommodations). Besides M-B, Volkswagen has accomplished this with the CC, and heck, even Hyundai sorta pulled it off with the Sonata.
This Gran Coupe however, doesn't quite pull off the look. Dimensionally, it may fit the category, but the drama is lacking. It's just not much more sleek than the 5 Series sedan. That said, the 6 Series Gran Coupe will no doubt be an exhilarating and luxurious place to spend your motoring time.
Also debuting from BMW, the super high performance M versions of the 6 coupe & convertible. Your speeding tickets await.
