Even if you have a long commute and need a car that gets great fuel economy you can still find an automobile that is fun to drive without breaking the bank at the gas station. Cars.com recently put together a list of the “Top 10 Fun-to-Drive Fuel Sippers”.  This list profiles and reviews ten autos that offer an EPA rating of at least 30 mpg but still offer enough performance and handling to be considered “fun”.

Here are the top five from the list:

2014 Mazda3 – Mazda’s SKYACTIV technology boosts the fuel economy allowing it to get up to 41 mpg on the highway and the i-ELOOP regenerative braking system allows even the upgraded 184-hp, 2.5L 4 cylinder engine to achieve 40 mpg. Even the base model includes power door locks and windows, 16-inch wheels, keyless entry, push-button ignition, body colored door handles, air conditioning and power-folding external mirrors. Lots of options are available and the Mazda3 doesn’t feel like an economy car even with a starting price of $16,945.

2014 Volkswagen Golf TDI – The base Golf comes with power windows and locks, cruise control, air conditioning, a trip computer, a rear wiper and washer, steel wheels and an 8-speaker system with an auxiliary input and the TDI model adds 17-inch alloy wheels, heated washer nozzles and footwell lighting. The TDI also gets up to 40 mpg with a responsive driving feel and a refined interior.

2014 FIAT 500 Turbo – With 30 mpg combined gas mileage, lively acceleration from the 135-hp turbocharged 1.4L MultiAir engine, and a host of performance upgrades, the FIAT 500 Turbo was built to deliver sports car handling in a small car.

2014 Mercedes-Benz CLA 250 – The CLA starts at $29,900 and is capable of delivering 38 mpg on the highway. Newly introduced in 2014 the CLA is Mercedes-Benz’s first front wheel drive and the smallest model the carmaker offers. The turbocharged 2.0L 4-cylinder engine makes 208 hp; enough to deliver a top notch driving experience.

2014 MINI Hardtop – Nearly all MINI models deliver over 30 mpg combined and all offer agile handling along with quick acceleration and attractive exteriors. MINI also offers a high degree of customization with base prices starting at $21,450.
